Konstantin Chaykin’s Lunokhod Prime…worn by the man himself!

It’s nice to speak to the actual watchmaker when the chance arises, and that tends to happen mainly in the AHCI Independents corner. Mr Chaykin showed me a few of his creations, including the Mystery.

The watch, made in St Petersberg, is every bit as awesome in the flesh as it was when I posted up pics of the Lunokhod New Moon a few months ago here. That moon sphere in particular is very imposing!!

In actual fact it is a large Ocean Pearl that had to be naturally round with a flat surface…very difficult to come by, and it goes some way to explaining why there are only going to be 8 pieces of this line made. This pearl actually remains stationary, and a silver half-sphere rotates around it to illustrate the moon phase. The full rotation of this silver cover takes exactly 29 days, 15 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds.

The time (oh yeah, it’s a watch, it’s supposed to tell the time as well!) is read on a retrograde arc across the top of the sphere and a small subdial at the bottom of the watch front.

The movement is completely made and finished by hand, and housed in a very unique shaped and finished case. These are the kind of things I travel to the show for…something new and exciting, finely engineered and quietly brilliant!
